Baptism
Every service of Baptism is welcomed with delight at Holy Trinity because it marks the beginning of a journey with God which continues for the rest of our lives, the first step in response to God’s love.
For all involved, particularly the candidates but also parents, godparents and sponsors, it is a joyful moment when we rejoice in what God has done for us in Christ. We all welcome the new Christian, promising support and prayer for their future. Hearing and doing these things provides an opportunity to remember our own baptism and reflect on the progress made on that journey, which is now to be shared with this new member of the Church.
The service is full of rich symbolism and imagery involving anointing with oil for each candidate, ‘drowning’ in the water of baptism and so ‘rising’ to new life, and the giving of candles to the newly baptised as a reminder of their exciting new journey walking in the light of Christ. For those of us already baptised, the service offers a reminder of the promises made and our Vicar ensures everyone gets wet!
Our Vicar enjoys visiting and spending time with those preparing for baptism to help them fully understand the journey they are about to begin.
